South Dakota State sophomore Griffan Callahan scored a career-high 15 points on Saturday in leading the Jackrabbits to an 80-72 win over Central Michigan in front of 1,302 fans at Frost Arena.
A total of four Jackrabbits finished in double figures, including Dale Moss, who finished with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
"When Dale is at his best, he's keeping balls alive, flying around. He's an X-factor for us and we need to get that consistently," said SDSU head coach Scott Nagy. "Griff (Callahan) physically is one of our toughest kids. I don't know if the guy can grab the rim, so it's not like he is a superior athlete, but he gets five offensive rebounds because he just has some nastiness to him. That's what our team needs."
Kai Williams and Nate Wolters both score 10 points in the win, which boosts the Jacks record to 5-7 on the season. Jordan Bitzer led the Chippewas, who fall to 4-6 with the loss, with 15 points. Robbie Harman and Marko Spica both scored 12 points in the loss.
Central Michigan got the ball on the opening tip and promptly went down and scored a three-pointer. The Jacks countered with a missed three at the other end and then fell into a six point hole as CMU nailed another three-pointer.
The lead grew to a game-high of seven at 8-1 early in the first half, but the Jacks kept their composure and worked their way back to tie the game three times before eventually taking the lead for good on a pair of Moss free throws with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Jacks then kept their foot on the gas, and used a 13-0 run to end the half that put them up 39-24 at the break.
The Chippewas cut that lead to six with 12:37 left in the game, but the Jacks quickly got its lead back into double digits and never allowed CMU to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Jackrabbits return to action one more time before the short holiday break when they play at Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Jacks and Golden Gophers tip-off from historic Williams Arena at 6 p.m., in a game that can be seen on the Big Ten Network. Various Cable and satellite providers carry the Big Ten Network, including DirecTV (channel 610) and Dish Network (channel 439).
