BROOKINGS, S.D. – Kaitlin Justice tallied two assists as the South Dakota State women's soccer team edged IUPUI 2-0 Friday at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, S.D.
Kayla Braffet sent a cross, which deflected off Justice to find Kelsey Ferguson right in front of the net to beat IUPUI's Kristin Haseley in the 31st minute of the game. The goal marks Ferguson's second on the season. Braffet moves into third on the all-time assists list with 12 on her career.
Eight minutes later, Justice took her own rebound and tapped it to Chelsey Poole. Poole scored the first goal of her collegiate career and ended the scoring for the game.
“It was a great win for us tonight. I thought we came out with good energy and were dangerous in the attack all night,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “IUPUI is a quality team, like all Summit League opponents. To get results, we have to play at a high level every time we step on the field.”
Goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis earned her sixth career shutout and ups her record to 7-1-2. She tallied two saves in her 90 minutes in the net. Stamatakis moves into fourth all-time in career shutouts.
The Jacks outshot the Jaguars 16-6, including 8-2 on-goal. Justice and Braffet each fired off three shots and Braffet with one on-goal. Christa Nyblom recorded two shots, including one on-goal.
The Jacks, now 7-2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Summit League, return to the pitch Sunday to face Western Illinois at 1 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
