BROOKINGS, S.D. - The number-three seeded South Dakota State women's soccer team ended their season in a shootout loss to No. 2 North Dakota State Friday at Fishback Soccer Park in the semi-finals of The Summit League Women's Soccer Championship presented by American Airlines.
Kaitlin Justice put the Jackrabbits on the board early in the game with an unassisted goal.
The Jacks couldn't hold onto the lead, though. In the second period NDSU's Michelle Gaffaney found a rebound and put the equalizing goal on the board.
After two scoreless overtimes, the match ended in a 1-all draw and, according to tie-breaker policies, proceeded to a shootout.
The Jacks and the Bison each took five shots with the Bison coming out on top 4-3. Abbey Stratton took the game-winning shot for the Bison and it sailed right by Jackrabbit goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis. Christa Nyblom, JoLynn Janckila and Tory Schiltgen took successful penalty kicks for the Jacks, while NDSU's Kalani Bertsch saved shots by Kelsey Ferguson and Danielle Neuhalfen.
"I thought we played a very good game tonight for the most part, but it seemed to be the same old story all season long. Playing well, but not finishing our chances," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "NDSU deserves credit for playing well and getting back in the game. What makes this loss even harder is that it was on our home field."
The Jackrabbits outshot the Bison 15-8, including 8-6 on-goal. SDSU senior Justice took four shots for the Jacks with two on-goal.
Stamatakis ends her debut season with an 11-2-4 record. She notched five saves for SDSU, while allowing only one goal.
The Bison move on to the championship game against Western Illinois Sunday at noon at Fishback Soccer Park.
No. 4 Western Illinois defeated No. 1 Oakland in a shootout after drawing a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
