GREEN BAY, Wis. - Junior Cori Bonte scored her first goal of the year as the South Dakota State women's soccer team kept Wisconsin-Green Bay out of the net for a 1-0 victory in Green Bay, Wis. Sunday.
Bonte received a feed from senior Kaitlin Justice and took a long shot from in front of the net to knock a shot home over Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch in the 87th minute.
"Overall, it was a great road trip for us. UW-Green Bay was very tough defensively and hard to break down, but our players kept pushing and our determination to get a goal finally came through," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "Bonte showed tremendous mentality in making a 60-yard run on a counter and it was great to get some quality play out of some players who haven't seen minutes this year."
The Jackrabbit defense allowed the Phoenix to take only two shots in the first half and none on-goal. Overall, the Jacks outshot the Phoenix 14-2 and 8-0 on-goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis held up in the net to secure her third-straight shutout this season and improve her record to 3-0-1.
The Jacks, now 3-1-2 on the season, return to Fishback Soccer Park Friday to host Northern Iowa at 6 p.m.
