RENO, Nev. - Freshman goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis earned her first career shutout this weekend as the South Dakota State women's soccer team defeated Montana 3-0 Sunday at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev.
"It turned out to be a tremendous weekend for the Jacks. Dealing with our first back-to-back weekend in over four years, combined with the hard travel and playing conditions made getting two wins over two tough teams all the more special," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer.
Junior Cori Bonte found senior Danni Healy early
in the first half. Healy beat the Montana
defender down the sideline. Her shot flew past Montana goalkeeper Julianna Jack just inside
the left post to put the Jacks up 1-0 and give Healy her second goal of the weekend.
Freshman Darci Miller found the rebound inside the box and put the Jacks up 2-0 in the 41st minute of the game.
The Jacks, with a 2-0 lead for most of the second half, beat Montana's Jack a third time with just over 45 seconds to go in the game.
Healy fed senior Kaitlin Justice who took a shot from 18 yards out and found the back of the net to end the game at 3-0. The goal marks Justice's first for the season and 14th on her career. Justice currently sits in eighth place in the top-10 goal-scoring leaders all-time.
"It was great to see our dynamic attack score some great goals this weekend. Now we have to recover from this trip and prepare for another tough road trip to Wisconsin," said Wedemeyer.
Justice also led the Jacks in shots, including two on-goal. The Jacks just beat the Grizzlies in shots with 15-14 and 9-4 on-goal.
Stamatakis, who improves her record to 2-0, tallied four saves in her 90 minutes in the net.
The Jacks, now 2-1-1 on the season, are back in action Friday against Wisconsin at McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis. The road trip also includes a matchup against Wisconsin-Green Bay Sept. 12 in Green Bay, Wis.
