CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nate Wolters came up one assist shy of his second career double-double, but he scored 29 points and got plenty of help from Clint Sargent and his 23 points in a 105-95 win over Southern Utah on Saturday in Cedar City, Utah.
The Jackrabbits, who improve to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in The Summit League with the road sweep, topped the century mark for the first time at the Division I level, and the first time since a 107-104 loss to Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 4, 2004.
Southern Utah falls to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in league play.
"This is the toughest road trip in league in terms of effecting your legs and being tired, and it's not over yet, because we've got to get up at four in the morning to catch a plane, our kids are going to be exhausted by the time this is over," SDSU head coach Scott Nagy said. "I'm just frustrated that we had to score 105 points to win a basketball game."
In addition to Wolters and Sargent, three other Jackrabbits scored in double figures in the win. Jordan Dykstra scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, Chad White finished with 10 points and Tony Fiegen added 13 points and seven rebounds.
"I think we saw tonight that Tony is starting to get comfortable, and I can't even tell you how important that is for our basketball team that that happens," added Nagy. "We really need him to start being a factor, and he's doing that."
Ryan Brimley led the four Thunderbirds in double figures with 29 points off the bench. Jackson Stevenett added 19 points off the bench as the SUU bench outscored the SDSU bench 61-27. Jake Nielson scored 14 points before fouling out of the game, while Matt Massey rounded out the T-bird double digit scorers with 13 points.
After a couple of early lead changes, the Jackrabbits took the lead for good at 11-10 on a White jumper about five minutes into the game. SDSU led by as many as 18 points in the first half, but led by just seven, 45-38 at halftime.
SUU cut the lead to three points on two occasions early in the second half, and even though the Jacks led by double digits for most the second half, a string of SDSU missed free throws and SUU three-point makes cut the lead to six late, but too late for the Thunderbirds to complete the comeback.
The Jackrabbits return home to host Centenary on Thursday at Frost Arena at 7 p.m., followed by a game against Oral Roberts on Saturday in the back end of a doubleheader in Frost Arena at 7:30 p.m., following the SDSU women's game versus ORU at 5 p.m.
