TAMPA, Fla. -- The South Dakota State University men's swimming team won one event and claimed runner-up finishes in five other relays en route to a second-place finish Saturday at the Tampa Relays.
Host Tampa won the four-team meet with 136 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 98. Rounding out the competition were SUNY Geneseo with 86 points and SUNY New Paltz with 60.
In a meet featuring 10 different relays, the Jackrabbits 3x166-yard SNARF team of Nathaniel Weinman, Blake Yeager and Kyle Ochsner won the event in a time of 5 minutes, 15.31 seconds.
That same trio helped the Jackrabbits open the meet with a runner-up finish in the 800 freestyle relay, teaming with Jack Morrow for a time of 7:24.02.
SDSU also placed second in another traditional relay as the quartet of Phil Albu, Shea Patrick, Garth Wadsworth and Yann Desjardins finished as runners-up in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:41.56. Patrick and Desjardins later teamed with Alex McLain and Ethan McMahon for a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley relay in 3:50.84.
Also garnering second-place finishes were the 3x100 backstroke and 3x100 breaststroke relays. The backstroke trio of Albu, Alex McLain and Connor McGinnis clocked a time of 2:46.33, while the breaststroke trio of Patrick, John Overman and Desjardins turned in a time of 3:07.84.
The Jackrabbits return to dual action Jan. 12 at South Dakota.
