VERMILLION – Ben Bolinske swept the sprints and swam the leadoff leg of a pool-record 400-meter freestyle relay in helping pace the South Dakota State University men's swimming and diving team to a 169-131 dual victory over the University of South Dakota on Wednesday.
A senior, Bolinske won the 50-meter freestyle in 23.62 seconds and later claimed the 100 freestyle in 52.39 seconds. In the final event of the afternoon, Bolinske teamed with Ben Johnson, Chris Rumrill and Daniel Jacobson for a winning time of 3 minutes, 30.68 seconds, shaving nearly a second off the previous DakotaDome pool record.
SDSU padded its lead by sweeping the top three spots in three different events. The Jackrabbit trio of Thomas Davey (8:51.07), Chris Angerhofer (8:51.97) and Weston Christensen (9:00.29) secured the top three spots in the 800 freestyle. Angerhofer later led a Jackrabbit sweep in the 200 butterfly, posting a winning time of 2:11.24, followed by Garth Wadsworth (2:11.74) and Tony Mikrut (2:19.56).
Jacobson paced the Jackrabbits in the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 2:08.92, and was followed by Chase Petersen (2:10.52) and Connor McGinnis (2:10.57).
The Jackrabbits also swept the top spot in both diving competitions. Parker Brown won on the 1-meter board with a score of 248.55 for six dives and Noah Batenhorst dove to victory in the 3-meter competition with a score of 285.45.
Freshman Wyatt Rumrill closed out the individual victories for the Jackrabbits by winning the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:27.19. He added a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.92.
The Jackrabbits return to action Nov. 20 with a home dual against North Dakota.
