After competing against seven top-50 teams in its spring opener, the South Dakota State men's golf team will face a pair of top-10 teams when it plays in the eighth annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, presented by Cleveland Golf, at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
The three-day, 54-hole event takes place at the Classic Club, a par-72, 7,322-yard layout with 18 holes played Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Jackrabbits are one of 22 teams in the field, which tees off at 8 a.m. CT each day.
Competing alongside the Jackrabbits in the tournament are No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 10 Oregon, No. 24 Colorado, No. 66 TCU, Denver, Old Dominion, Wyoming, Nebraska, Gonzaga, Cal State Northridge, Kansas, UC Riverside, UALR, UNC Wilmington, Fresno State, UT Arlington, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Oral Roberts, Cal State Fullerton and Loyola Marymount.
Then-No. 45 Kansas looks to defend its 2016 team title. The Jayhawks finished the three-day tournament with a two-over par 866. Gonzaga's Sean Walsh won the individual title with a three-round 209 (68-71-70).
Last year, sophomore
Alejandro Perazzo turned in one of his best finishes of the season, tying for 19
th, shooting a final-round 75 with a pair of birdies. He finished with a 220 (71-74-75). The Jackrabbits placed 14th of 20 teams, firing an 899 (298-301-300).
Senior
Grant Smith leads the Jackrabbits with a 74.56 stroke average, ranking 11
th in The Summit League. Smith has five rounds at or below par.
Sophomore
Jaxon Lynn has State's lone top-five finish and has a 75.47 stroke average with five rounds at par or below. He ranks 20th in The Summit League.
South Dakota State has a 300.0 stroke average, ranking it sixth in the league.
