South Dakota State women's soccer saw its 11-match home unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park, falling 1-0 to Creighton.
Â
Playing in front of 283 fans, the Jackrabbits (3-3) were tagged for an early goal, and though SDSU and Creighton finish with 13 shots apiece, the Bluejays escaped with the win to close the weekend in a physical contest that saw 16 fouls and four yellow cards.
Â
Marisa Schulz,
Karlee Manding,
Annie Williams,
Bianca Madonia and
Allie Zueger each fired two shots in the match, with Schulz, Williams and Madonia putting an effort on target.
Â
Maggie Smither played all 90 minutes between the pipes and came up with six saves.
Â
"I thought for a large portion of the game we had a great rhythm," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "It was unfortunate to allow an early goal, because that always makes the game a little more difficult. But, I thought there's a good lesson in there, that if you play really well for a large portion of the game, but have lapses, the game can punish you. And hats off to Creighton, that's what happened today."
Â
Creighton pressured early with four shots in the opening 10 minutes, breaking through at 9:04 when Karia Houser intercepted a pass near the top of the box, took two steps and found the lower right corner of the net.
Â
Down 1-0, the Jackrabbits picked up the pace and worked the rest of the period to even the shot count at seven, but continued to trail at the break.
Â
Out of the locker room, Creighton again blitzed early in the period, but State held strong this time around before controlling the tempo for the final 40 minutes of action. SDSU put up six shots down the stretch, including a near-miss on Williams' free kick from 35 yards out after a Creighton yellow card.
Â
In the end, however, the early deficit held up and the Jackrabbits saw their three-match winning streak come to a close.
