GAME 17: South Dakota State (14-1-1) at South Dakota (9-3-2, 4-2-0) |
South Dakota State takes a quick trip down I-29 for an important rivalry contest against South Dakota Sunday in Vermillion. The game carries strong Summit League standings implications as three important points are up for grabs with only two weekends remaining in the regular season. The Jacks enter the weekend atop the standings with 16 points in conference play while USD sits close behind in third place with 12 points.
"[USD] is a very good team and this is probably the best team they've had since I have coached in the league," head coach Brock Thompson said. "It is going to be a fun rivalry game. Their team will be ready to play and our team will embrace it as well. It's always a fun game when it's SDSU and USD and you can say that about whatever sport you want. This is why you play and coach, to be a part of fun games like this."
The Jacks' three remaining games are all on the road and are all against teams in the top four of the Summit League standings vying for the regular season crown.
"It's a typical Summit League season where something is decided yet at this point," Thompson said. "That's what makes Summit League soccer fun. It's going to be a battle. Our focus is to stay true to who we are and play Jackrabbit soccer."
