South Dakota State (6-1-0) got back into the win column with a victory in a physical battle against Northern Iowa (2-4-1) Friday evening at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jacks surrendered the game's first goal but scored four unanswered goals, two of which came off the foot of
Karlee Manding, to prevail, 4-1, over the Panthers.
Manding's two goals were the most she has ever scored in a match at the collegiate level. Sisters
Avery Murdzek and
Laney Murdzek each tallied a goal of their own to round out the game's scoring. Freshman speedster
Teani Arakawa continued her impressive freshman campaign with an assist, her seventh point of the season, while
Katherine Jones notched an assist for her first point of the year.
Avery Murdzek scored the Jacks' first goal of the contest when she took a beautiful feed from Jones and placed it into the bottom right corner of the net from 17 yards out to draw level in the 34
th minute. Manding gave the Jacks the lead with her first goal in the 42
nd minute when she took an SDSU corner and curled it past the keeper and in by the near post.
Laney Murdzek found the back of the net in the 65
th minute when a Jackrabbit free kick deflected off the Panther wall. Murdzek placed the deflection into the net with her first touch from 10 yards out. Manding placed an exclamation point on the win with her second goal of the game in the 84
th minute off an assist from fellow Hawaiian
Teani Arakawa.
SDSU outshot Northern Iowa 20-7 and won the possession battle 64% to 36%.
Taylor Lock only needed to make one save to earn the win and improve her record to 4-0 while in net this season.
Notes
- SDSU is now 8-4-2 after a loss under head coach Brock Thompson.
- The Jacks have gone 26 consecutive home matches without a loss, with SDSU's last loss in Brookings happening three years ago to the day (9/10/2018 vs. Arizona State).
- A freshman either scored or assisted on three of SDSU's four goals in the contest. Freshmen have accounted for 36% of the Jacks' offensive production this season (22 of 61 points).
- Karlee Manding registered a career-high two goals in the contest.
- The Jackrabbits are 10-2-3 all-time against Northern Iowa.
