BROOKINGS, S.D. – The rematch of last season's Summit League Soccer championship game met anticipated expectations as Denver and South Dakota State participated in a close contest for all 90 minutes at Fishback Soccer Park Friday. The two sides' even performances showed in the final margin as the two teams tied 0-0.Â
"It was a great soccer game," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Credit to coach (Jeff) Hooker and Denver, any time we play I feel like they make us better. I hope and think they'd say the same thing."
Â
The Jackrabbits held a majority of possession in the match with an edge of 63-37%. However, the Pioneers had more shot attempts finishing ahead of SDSU 8-6. Both teams had two shots on goal in the first half, while the lone shot placed on net in the second half was by Denver's Delaney McGGowen. Her attempt was saved in the 60th minute by SDSU's
Jocelyn Tanner.Â
Â
Denver goalkeeper Nerea Arrazola made one save on the night and it came off a free kick opportunity that was taken by the Jackrabbits'
Kaycee Manding. Tanner had her lone save while SDSU's
Hailee Fischer snagged two saves in the first half. Â
Â
"I felt like there were large portions of the game where we had a lot of the ball and created some chances," Thompson said. "Then there were some times where our goalkeepers made some big saves too. I just thought it was a solid soccer game. I'm proud of our team, disappointed we couldn't find a goal, but proud of the performance we put on."
