DES MOINES, Iowa — South Dakota State maintained control of its non-conference match at Drake for most of the proceedings, but after an equalizer in the middle of the second half, took back the lead and a victory as the Jackrabbits topped the Bulldogs 2-1 at Drake Stadium on Thursday.Â
Â
SDSU registered the first two shots of the night before it struck first on the scoreboard.
Katherine Jones sent a pass to
Maya Hansen who worked her way up the right sideline. She dribbled the ball in towards the box and sent a left-footed shot past the diving goalkeeper. Hansen's fourth goal of the season came in the 14th minute to put the Jackrabbits ahead, 1-0.Â
Â
A competitive first half kept the score column 1-0 at the break as SDSU starting goalkeeper
Jocelyn Tanner recorded a save.Â
Â
The Bulldogs found an opening to tie the score in the 63rd minute. A change in possession deep in SDSU's side of the field saw Drake's Lily Overstreet dish a pass in front of goal to Hallie Peak who easily found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits found a game-winning goal at an unsuspecting moment.Â
Â
Following an attacking possession by the Bulldogs, SDSU's
Hayley Lindaman passed the ball from the Jackrabbit box to
Maleah Evans. From deep on the South Dakota State side of the field, Evans sent a long ball to a sprinting
Avery Murdzek who was left alone by the Drake back line. The Bulldog goalkeeper tried to cut the angle off for Murdzek by rushing towards her, but Murdzek calmly sent a shot inside the pipe to make it 2-1 in the 78th minute.Â
Â
Drake was able to just get one corner kick opportunity in the final 12 minutes of play as the Jackrabbits closed the door on the match. SDSU finished the game with a 15-5 edge in shots and 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Drake also was called for 20 fouls to SDSU's eight.  Â
