BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State is set to host its final two non-conference home regular season matches this week at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits take on Grand Canyon at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Brookings, then face Green Bay at noon on Sunday.
Â
The Jackrabbits stand at 5-1 overall following their most recent road trip. SDSU fell behind 2-0 early in its Sept. 1 matchup at Utah State, but got a 44th minute goal from
Kayla Anderson to make it 2-1. The Jacks were unable to get an equalizing goal over the final 45 minutes and picked up their first defeat.Â
Â
SDSU rebounded with a 3-2 victory over Idaho State in Pocatello on Sept. 3. The Jackrabbits held a 2-0 lead after the first half of action, but the Bengals eventually tied the score at 2-2 with 30 minutes remaining. While SDSU fell down a player due to a red card given out, the Jacks'
Katherine Jones scored an 81st minute goal to boost SDSU to a win.
Â
The Jackrabbits and Lopes meet for the second consecutive season on Thursday. SDSU earned a 1-0 victory in Phoenix a season ago on Aug. 21.
Avery Murdzek scored an 83rd minute goal to even the all-time series between the two sides to 1-1.
Â
GCU is 4-1-1 overall this season with the Lopes' lone loss a 2-1 defeat to Mississippi State on Aug. 17. Gianna Gourley has a team-high 15 points on five goals and an assist. Leah Pirro has six assists, while goalkeeper DeAira Jackson holds a .880 save percentage and .500 goals against average.Â
Â
"It's a great team," said South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson of GCU. "They're a team like we were a season ago that finished top 75 in the RPI. It was a heck of a game we played there last year that we won late on an
Avery Murdzek goal. It's going to be a great soccer game. They're a very good team and I know that we're excited to play them Thursday night."
Â
Green Bay is 0-2-2 through four matches this season and faces Western Illinois prior to its trip to Brookings. The Phoenix have three players that have scored goals and have seen a pair of goalkeepers split time in between the pipes. SDSU is 7-2 all-time against the Phoenix and that includes having won the last seven meetings, the last which came in 2018.
Â
The Jackrabbits have played 23 players over the course of the 2023 season.
Maya Hansen has team highs in both goals (5) and points (11), while
Avery Murdzek follows with three goals and seven points.
Kaycee Manding paces the team in minutes with 506 in the back row.
Â
The weekend serves as a reunion for the 2006 SDSU soccer team which won the program's first ever conference title. The Jackrabbits have since won a total of 13 conference championships, along with having made six NCAA Tournament appearances, something the 2006 team was unable to qualify for at the time due to the athletic department's transition to Division I and The Summit League.Â
Â
"The 2006 team was the first Division I conference tournament champion," Thompson said. "They won the United Soccer Conference that season, and it's really our first reunion. We're going to do some special things for them because they really laid the foundation for our program. They've remained very connected to us and it'll be great to have them around."

No matter the size, a gift in support of the SDSU soccer program will help towards unlocking possibly more than $25,000 in challenges that directly benefit the team. Along with that, a ticket deal is in place for the Thursday match against Grand Canyon. If a person contributes directly to soccer on One Day for STATE, they can get free admission to the match. The donation link will be live on Thursday at
OneDayforSTATE.org.
