South Dakota State makes its return to The Summit League Championship match on Sunday when the Jackrabbits take on Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. The Jacks battle the Golden Eagles, who earned the tournament's No. 1 seed and hosting rights on their campus, at Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa.
SDSU will play in its third consecutive Summit League tournament title game. The Jacks won the 2024 championship by a 3-1 score over Oral Roberts in Fargo, N.D. SDSU hosted the 2023 title match and defeated Omaha, 1-0.
The Jackrabbits and Golden Eagles have an extensive history in Summit League tournament competition. The two sides will meet for the third consecutive postseason. The 2023 semifinal match in Brookings saw ORU score a fifth minute goal for an initial lead before the Jackrabbits scored five unanswered of their own en route to a 5-2 victory. The 2024 meeting was all SDSU from the start. The Jacks scored two goals in the opening 15 minutes, added another tally in the 48th minute, and held off any comeback following the Golden Eagles' lone goal in the 63rd minute.Â
SDSU holds a 4-0-1 record in the league's conference tournament over ORU. The Jackrabbits claimed the 2016 title via penalty kicks (3-2) over the Golden Eagles. SDSU also beat ORU in the 2015 semifinals (3-1) and the 2019 semifinals (1-0).Â
The Jackrabbits and Golden Eagles meet exactly two weeks after their last matchup. ORU and SDSU clashed at the Kirkland Activities in Broken Arrow, due to field conditions, in the regular season finale. The Jacks scored two early goals but were matched at 2-2 by halftime. A
Zoe Wittkop goal in the 48th minute eventually made the difference in a 3-2 win for the Jackrabbits. SDSU improved to 19-1-3 all-time over ORU with the win.Â
SDSU advanced to the championship match after a tightly played 1-0 contest against Denver in Thursday's semifinals.
Lauren Walter's strike in the 72nd minute made the difference as SDSU thwarted the Pioneers. It was the second straight season State knocked Denver out of the tournament. The Jacks are 3-0-3 all-time versus the Pioneers in Summit League Championship play.
The Jackrabbits came into postseason play as the back-to-back Summit League tournament champions. SDSU is now 7-0-3 all-time in the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and 16-6-6 overall since its first appearance in 2008.Â
The Jacks have won the Summit League title -- and earned NCAA Tournament berths in the process -- in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024. SDSU is tied with Oakland for a league-record eight tourney titles.Â
SDSU can win a third straight title for the first time since 2014-16. The only other program to do so in the league is Oakland (2000-03).
