South Dakota State begins its Summit League schedule on Thursday when the Jackrabbits host St. Thomas. The Jackrabbits and Tommies are slated for a 7 p.m. first kick at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
SDSU is currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak. Following four straight contests of scoring one goal, the Jackrabbits have scored a combined eight over the last two matches heading into conference play.Â
South Dakota State is in the midst of a stretch of five straight home games. The Jackrabbits began the span with consecutive non-conference wins over Northern Colorado (6-3) and Wyoming (2-0). SDSU will host North Dakota (Oct. 2) and North Dakota State (Oct. 5) before hitting the road again.
SDSU has a solid history in Summit League opening matches. The Jackrabbits' 4-1 win in their conference opener against Omaha last season improved them to 17-1-1 all-time in league debuts. State is 16-1-2 all-time in its Summit League home-opening match of the year. Â
St. Thomas heads to Brookings with a 3-4-1 record. The Tommies are coming off a 2-0 victory over Western Illinois last Thursday. SDSU and St. Thomas have met four prior times with the Jackrabbits having won each of the four contests. The closest meeting between the two came a season ago in St. Paul. An
Adrianne Agbayani goal in the 82nd minute made the difference in a 1-0 Jackrabbit victory.
The Jackrabbits are 6-1-3 overall heading into Thursday's match. SDSU continues its trend among the best in Division I women's soccer. SDSU is one of 47 programs to end its non-conference with a .750 win percentage or higher. SDSU's current RPI of 83rd trails only Denver (68th) among Summit League programs. The next highest in the conference is Oral Roberts at 163rd.
Two standouts in SDSU's most recent win were honored on Tuesday. Freshman
Jenna Maloy was named The Summit League's Offensive Peak Performer of the Week, while goalkeeper
Mallorie Benhart was tabbed the Defensive Peak Performer of the Week. Maloy scored a goal versus Wyoming. Benhart made eight saves in the victory.
