BROOKINGS, S.D. – A familiar face will assume the associate head coach position for the South Dakota State soccer program as
Caylee Costello has been elevated into the role, head coach
Brock Thompson announced Thursday.Â
Â
Costello has been a mainstay in the program over the past 15 years. She recently completed her ninth season as an assistant coach. Prior to her full-time position, Costello served as a graduate assistant on the staff for two years and as a volunteer assistant for one. Her coaching experience was proceeded by a college career at South Dakota State that saw the former Jackrabbit become a four-time letterwinner. Â
Â
"I'm pleased to be able to have Caylee serve as our associate head coach," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Caylee has been a valuable member of the coaching staff during nearly my entire time within the program. She comes to work every day and exhibits all of the traits it takes to be successful as a Jackrabbit.Â
Â
"We were very fortunate to have a consistent staff since I took over as head coach. This move allows Caylee to continue to grow in the profession and remain in a place that I know means the world to her."Â
Â
Costello has seen the SDSU program develop into one of the most steady squads in all of Division I women's soccer. Her time as a student-athlete from 2010-13 featured a Summit League regular season title won during her sophomore campaign. Costello started in every match during her final two years of eligibility at defensive midfield. Her senior year was capped with First Team All-Summit League accolades. She also was one of the first two Jackrabbit soccer players to be named to The Summit League All-Academic Team.Â
Â
The Sioux Falls native took on a volunteer assistant role in 2014 and has since been a member of the staff across 12 seasons. In that span, the Jackrabbits have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments. SDSU has won a combined 11 conference championships, which includes eight Summit League tournament championships and three regular season titles. The 12-year stretch has seen the Jacks accumulate a 153-54-37 overall record (.704 win percentage).Â
Â
Costello has assumed her duties as associate head coach. Thompson enters his 10th season guiding the program as head coach. Costello replaces Andy Janssen who took over as the head coach for the women's soccer team at the University of Sioux Falls in April.Â
