SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The SDSU volleyball team battled with the top-15 Minnesota Golden Gophers, Saturday afternoon at the Pentagon, but fell short, dropping the match, 3-1.

Sylvie Zgonc got back into form ending the match with 16 kills on 45 swings, hitting .245 for the day. Hannah Klein followed her with nine kills on 24 swings, while adding five blocks. Rylee Martin was back to her old ways from the setting position ending with 23 assists and a block. Claire Logeais ended with five blocks, tied for the team lead with Klein, followed by Taylor Byl who added four blocks of her own. Kennedy Whitford led the Jacks on the serving line with four aces on the day.

For the Gophers, they were led by McKenna Wucherer who was as advertised, ending with 25 kills on 46 swings, hitting .413 on the day. Stella Swenson was in fine form as well ending with 51 assists on 110 attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Set 1: The Jacks came to play in the first, trading points early with the top-15 side. After a few blocks by Claire Logeais, Hannah Klein and Sylvie Zgonc, the Jacks found themselves with the early lead, 10-9. The Gophers found their footing an rallied off several points to get the lead back, 14-11. From there the Gophers were able to put their foot on the gas and hold off the Jackrabbits just long enough to take the set, 25-22.

Set 2: The Gophers put their heads down and went to work in the second, getting out to an early five point lead and extending it with a 6-0 run in the middle of the set. From there, the 14th ranked Gophers never wavered and took the set by a score of 25-14.

Set 3: The Jacks recovered in the third, and the two squads traded points back and forth all the to 9-9. The two teams battled back and forth and the Jacks would not lie down coming out of the media timeout down, 15-14 and rattling off several two point rallies to get the score up to 21-18. The Jacks took care of business to finish the set, putting on a 3-0 run to take the set, 25-20 and send the game to the fourth.

Set 4: The Jacks came out hot off of their set three win in the fourth and took an early 6-4 lead. However Minnesota was able to come back and knot the score at 8-8 and go on a 3-0 run to take the lead to 11-8. The Gophers extended their lead to five in the middle of the set and never looked back, going on several runs and eventually taking the set, 25-17 and the match 3-1.

NOTES:

First set SDSU has taken off a top-25 opponent this year.
Zgonc went above 1,500 kills and now sits at 1,509, sixth in program history.
SDSU heads to USD next Friday for their Interstate Series matchup and first match of Summit League play.
