ROCHESTER, Mich. - The South Dakota State women's soccer team dropped its first match since August with the 2-1 loss to Oakland Sunday in Rochester, Mich.
The Jackrabbits scored the first goal of the game just 18 seconds into the match. Tory Schiltgen found Danni Healy who beat Oakland goalkeeper Shannon Coley from the top of the 18-yard area.
In the 37th minute, Oakland's Nicole DeLuca scored a penalty kick to even the score and three minutes later Serena San Cartier beat out Elisa Stamatakis when she finished a cross off Kristen Steffes to up the Golden Grizzlies 2-1 and end the scoring.
The Jacks kept the Grizzlies to just two shots in the second half but did not manage to put one of their 10 second-half shots into the net.
Danni Healy led the Jacks with three shots, including one on-goal. Steph Peterson followed with two shots on the game. The Jacks outshot the Grizzlies 14-8, but the Grizzlies beat the Jacks in shots on-goal 5-3.
Elisa Stamatakis gained the first loss of her career to make her record 6-1-2. She tallied three saves during her 90 minutes in the net but allowed two goals.
"It was a pretty physical game and we let a lot of extraneous things get to us today. Oakland played a tough game and to their credit, did well to come back," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "We just need to regain our focus for the next Summit League matchups."
The Jacks, now 6-2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Summit League, return to Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, S.D. next week for a pair of Summit League matchups in IUPUI and Western Illinois
