South Dakota State earned a season-opening win for the second time in the last three seasons after defeating Augustana on a soggy evening at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits and Vikings were scoreless at the halfway point, but four second-half goals propelled SDSU to a 4-1 victory over its in-state foe.
Maya Hansen netted two goals on a game-high six shots, but it was the Jackrabbit freshmen that stole the headline. Newcomers
Teani Arakawa and
Laney Murdzek each found the back of the net in their first collegiate game.
Karlee Manding and
Hayley Lindaman each tallied an assist on the evening.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Arakawa wasted no time getting the Jacks on the board early in the second half. The Makawao, Hawaii native received a beautiful pass from Lindaman in the 46
th minute and placed it in the top left corner from 18 yards out.
The Jacks would add a second goal 10 minutes later when Manding sent in a corner kick that found the head of Hansen, and eventually the back of the net, after bouncing off the crossbar.
Augustana cut the Jackrabbit lead back to 2-1 with a quick response, but Murdzek eventually put the game back out of reach with her first-career goal in the 85
th minute. Hansen put an exclamation point on the win with less than 30 seconds remaining when she scored off a free kick from just beyond the penalty area.
The Jacks possessed the ball for 64% of the match and out-shot the Vikings, 23-10. Freshman
Avery Murdzek fired four shots while Arakawa added four of her own.
Taylor Lock earned the win in net for SDSU after only allowing one goal and finishing with three saves.
Quotable – Head coach Brock Thompson
"I thought it took us a little bit to get into the game, but I thought as the game went on we got better and better. We have a very deep team and some of that is because of the level that some of the freshman are playing at right now. That's not only exciting about this season, but for the future of the program. We'll take a look at the film tomorrow to see what we can learn from this game and get ready for Sunday."
