South Dakota State improved to 2-0-0 for the second time in three seasons with a victory over UTRGV (0-1-0) on a windy Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jacks struck first with a goal in the opening 10 minutes and didn't look back en route to a 3-1 decision over the Vaqueros.
Maya Hansen continued her remarkable start to the 2021 season with a goal and two assists in the contest, while
Cece Limongi and
Eden Brooker each found the back of the net for their first goals of the year. Brooker, along with
Rachel Preston, each earned a point in the assist column.
"It was really difficult to play with the strong winds today," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "I was really impressed with how our team started the game and I felt like that really set a tone for the match. Overall, I thought it was a good first weekend. We saw some areas where we can improve, but there was certainly a lot to be excited about from this weekend."
The Jacks worked from side-to-side and strung together 15 passes as they worked their way from deep in their defending third, but the duo of Brooker and Hansen broke through and eventually found Limongi for the game's opening goal in the ninth minute.
Brooker netted the game's second goal just six minutes later, assisted by Hansen and Preston, to give the Jacks an early 2-0 advantage. A quick UTRGV response a minute later cut the Jackrabbit lead back to one, however.
The two sides exchanged chances until
Maya Hansen gave SDSU some breathing room with a goal in the 59
th minute. Jackrabbit goalie
Jocelyn Tanner made a career-high five saves in the win.
Both squads fired 13 shots aside, six of which went on target. The Jackrabbits held the edge in possession 53% to 47%.
