Brookings, S.D. - The South Dakota State wresting team scored their first win at First Bank & Trust Arena as they took down Augustana on Friday night. SDSU scored bonus points in all but one of their matches as they shut out the Vikings, 49-0.
The Jacks were without two of their returning All-Americans as Tanner Jordan and Cade DeVos prepare to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday. Brady Roark stepped in for Tanner Jordan at 125 pounds against the Vikings.
Roark got off to a slow start, allowing an early takedown from Augustana's Jaxson Rohman, but battled back in the second and third periods, scoring two takedowns and earning the riding time point, grabbing a 9-5 win over Rohman.
Derrick Cardinal started for the Jacks at 133 pounds against Augustana's Owen Hansen. Cardinal scored a takedown in the early minutes of the match and didn't look back, pinning Hansen in 1:36. The junior from Forest Lake, Minn., goes into the record books scoring the first pin inside of First Bank & Trust Arena.
Avery Allen made his dual debut for the Jackrabbits at 141 pounds against Connor Whiteley. The redshirt freshman scored two takedowns in the first period and would ride out the rest of the match, earning a major decision 13-4.
Colin Dupil, a redshirt freshman from Greeneville, Tenn., stepped up to the mat for the Jacks at 149 pounds. He would score two takedowns in two periods and unload in period three as he earned a technical fall win over Alex Mentzer.
Cobe Siebrecht made his Jackrabbit debut in the final match before the intermission. The transfer from Iowa would make his presence felt inside First Bank & Trust Arena, scoring three takedowns before pinning Logan Butzon at 4:14. This was Siebrecht's first dual competition since the 2022-23 season when he competed at Iowa. Going into the intermission the Jacks lead, 24-0.
Drake Rhodes got the start for SDSU at 165 pounds, going up against Augustana's Payton Handevidt. Rhodes grabbed two takedowns at the end of the first two periods and then caught fire in the third, landing three takedowns and securing the riding time point as he got his first win as a Jackrabbit, a technical fall victory, 18-3.
Marcus Espinoza-Owens went up a weight class to fill in for Cade DeVos at 174 pounds. The redshirt freshman scored six takedowns in the match and secured a technical fall victory, 22-7, over Payton Anderson.
Returning All-American Bennett Berge stepped back onto the mat for the first time since finishing fourth at the NCAA Tournament in 2024. He showed no signs of ring rust as he shutout Gavin Gulbranson, 17-0, earning the technical fall victory.
At 197 pounds, Zach Glazier made his SDSU debut. The sixth-year senior from Albert Lea, Minn., landed five takedowns and secured the riding time point as he dominated his first match as a Jackrabbit.
Luke Rasmussen finished the night out for the Jackrabbits, scoring a takedown and three near falls to secure the technical fall win over Max Balow of Augustana, 16-0.
UP NEXT
Cade DeVos and Tanner Jordan will compete tomorrow night at the NWCA All-Star Classic against Levi Haines from Penn State and Jore Volk of Wyoming, respectively. The event will take place at Rec Hall in State College, Pa. and will begin at 6 p.m. CST.
