OMAHA, Neb. - The Jacks dropped their Summit League road test against Omaha Thursday night, 3-2.
Sylvie Zgonc led the Jacks in kills with 21, but the Omaha defense stifled her throughout the match, forcing 14 attack errors. Taylor Byl had a career night, finishing with eight kills on 14 swings and no errors, plus nine blocks, including two solos. Zgonc and Rylee Martin each tallied a double-double, Zgonc on 21 kills and 17 digs and Martin on 25 assists and 14 digs.
For Omaha, the story was their three-pronged attack of Faith Venable, Lara Maric, and Dara Obeid. Venable led the way for the Mavericks with 19 kills on 48 swings, while Maric and Obeid added 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Obeid put on a defensive masterclass, adding 11 blocks, while Maric added nine. Maddie Stuesser pulled all the strings for Omaha, ending the game with 53 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1: The two teams came out of the gates swinging, as Omaha and SDSU traded points all the way to 9-9. SDSU took a two-point lead to get the deficit to 12-10, before Omaha unleashed a 5-0 run that allowed them to take a three-point lead of their own. The Mavericks were able to stave off any more runs from the Jacks for the rest of the set and took the first, 25-20.
Set 2: SDSU steadied themselves in the second set, although it was still a battle as the two teams traded points all the way up to 12-12 in the set. A pair of two-point runs allowed the Jacks to take a 19-18 lead late in the set, but it was far from over as Omaha responded with a 3-0 run of their own to push the lead to 21-19. With Omaha up 25-24, the Jack fought off the match point and rattled off a 3-0 run on the back of two
Hannah Klein kills and a Klein solo block to seal up the second set, 27-25.
Set 3: The third set was all Jackrabbits as they came out of the gate hot, going on a 3-0 run to start the set. From there, Omaha was able to get the occasional point in, but SDSU was able to pull ahead with another 3-0 run to get the lead to 12-6. The Jacks were able to extend their lead to 17-14 before putting together an 8-0 run that clinched the third set, 25-14.
Set 4: Omaha responded in the fourth set with a 6-1 run to start the set and never looked back. While the Jacks were able to get the deficit to three multiple times, it proved futile as the Mavericks pulled ahead in the set by a five-point margin and forced a fifth set after taking set four, 25-20.
Set 5: As they did for much of the night, the two teams traded blows in the fifth, with either squad only able to get out to a two-point lead. With the score 10-10, the Mavericks put together a two-point run from Faith Venable on a kill and an ace, giving the Mavericks the 12-10 lead. From there, the Jacks fought for three more points, but the two-point Maverick lead proved too tough to overcome as they were able to clinch the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.
